The Ragdoll Breed
Everything You Need to Know
Ragdolls are one of the largest and most gentle domestic cat breeds in the world. Known for their stunning blue eyes, silky semi-long coats, and famously docile temperament, they make extraordinary companions.
Breed Overview
What Makes a Ragdoll?
The Ragdoll breed was developed in the 1960s by breeder Ann Baker in Riverside, California. The name comes from their tendency to go limp and relaxed when picked up — like a ragdoll toy. Today they are one of the most popular cat breeds in the world, prized for their gentle nature and striking appearance.
Ragdolls are a pointed breed, meaning their color is concentrated on the face, ears, legs, and tail. They are born white and develop their full color over the first two to three years of life. All Ragdolls have blue eyes — it is a defining characteristic of the breed.

The Gentle Giant
Dog-Like Loyalty
Ragdolls follow their people from room to room, greet you at the door, and often learn to play fetch. Their devotion to their family is unlike most cats.
Calm & Relaxed
Ragdolls have a naturally low-key temperament. They rarely scratch or bite, making them ideal for families with children, seniors, and other pets.
Highly Social
These cats thrive on human companionship. They do not do well when left alone for long periods — they want to be part of the family, always.
Quiet Voice
Ragdolls are not overly vocal. They communicate softly and gently, making them well-suited for apartment living or quieter households.
Indoor Only
Due to their trusting, non-aggressive nature, Ragdolls should be kept indoors. They lack the street-smart instincts of other breeds and are not equipped for outdoor life.
Great with Kids
Their patient, gentle nature makes them one of the best breeds for families with young children. They tolerate handling well and rarely lash out.
Colors & Patterns
A Rainbow of Ragdolls
Ragdolls come in six colors — seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, and cream — and three main patterns. Each combination produces a uniquely beautiful cat.
Colorpoint
The classic Ragdoll look. Dark color on the face mask, ears, legs, and tail with a lighter body. No white markings. Clean, elegant, and striking.
Mitted
Like the colorpoint, but with white mittens on the front paws and white boots on the back legs. Often has a white chin and belly stripe. Charming and distinctive.
Bicolor
Features an inverted V of white on the face, white legs, and a white belly. The most white of the three patterns. Show-quality bicolors are especially prized.

Care Guide
Caring for Your Ragdoll
Grooming
Despite their long, silky coat, Ragdolls have minimal undercoat and are less prone to matting than other long-haired breeds. Brush 2–3 times per week to keep the coat tangle-free and reduce shedding.
Diet & Nutrition
Feed a high-quality, protein-rich diet. Ragdolls are prone to obesity, so monitor portions carefully. Fresh water should always be available. Many owners supplement with wet food for hydration.
Exercise & Play
Ragdolls are moderately active. Daily interactive play sessions with wand toys, puzzle feeders, or fetch keep them mentally stimulated and physically healthy. Cat trees and window perches are favorites.
Health Monitoring
Ragdolls can be predisposed to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). Annual vet checkups and cardiac screenings are recommended. Reputable breeders like us HCM-test all breeding cats.
Litter Box
Keep litter boxes clean — Ragdolls are fastidious and may refuse a dirty box. One box per cat plus one extra is the recommended rule. Unscented, clumping litter is generally preferred.
Socialization
Ragdolls need companionship. If you are away from home frequently, consider adopting two so they have each other. They get along beautifully with other cats, dogs, and gentle children.
